joshuaguero said: So I have been thinking about what i wanted to suggest that might help you with your work. I have come up with two suggestions, try them out if they sound appealing to you.
(1)Black paint, try to reserve the use of black paint to areas that really need the color black. For shading try to mix colors to make a darker shade of the same color you're making darker or even (to follow your slightly-psychadelic color schemes) use a complementary (opposite on the color wheel) or near-comp color to create the shaded area. Getting color down takes a lot of experimenting but is a lot of fun and really helps to make a piece of work your own. Black has a tendency to make other colors seem a bit dirty and makes it harder to have contrast in your colors. Contrast between light and dark (shaded) parts of your picture can really make the subject stand out.
(2) If you are anything like me you will have times when you feel really creative, like there just isnt enough time and others when there is no inspiration to be found. Harness this. When you feel creative, make things; I like to sketch and draw, shoot photos and paint every now and then. When you don't feel so creative go back and touch up the stuff you made before. I always have a more critical eye when I don't feel creative so I take the opportunity to touch up what I did before and just look over things, trying to spot my mistakes. I'll re-sketch a piece that I feel I made a mistake on or didn't do well enough on and focus on the problem area. Doing re-do's is also a good way of getting back into the creative mode as well. It's a cycle.
Hope these help. I'd be glad to share more of my thoughts if you're willing to take them, it just takes me a while to plan out what I want to say. Keep up the good work. By the way I really like the style of the face on the bottom right of your latest post. I think it is because it looks almost like a mask or something, and also how the colors work together. Cant wait to see what you come up with next.
Wow, thanks for that, really appreciate you taking the time to give me advice!
On the first part, ill keep that in mind. With no training of any sort, I realize theres prolly a buncha similar technical things I should work on…really just do what comes naturaly, with as little thought as possible. But yeah, I will definitely try to limit the black…ive also noticed it…but again, just never really thought about improving it’s so thanks:)
On the other, I hear ya. For the first three months or so, I really had no inspiration droughts. I was averaging at least one per day and always seemed to have something I wanted to do next. Past couple months ive run into some real life troubles that have kinda reversed the trend. I still get stuff done, and love it when I am doing it…but its been a lot tougher to get around to doing anything and finding subjects. There are quite a few past pieces I wasnt entirely sure of upon completion tho, so again, going back is probably a good idea for times like these.
Thanks again so much for the advice; I am always open to comments and criticism, if you come up with more.
And that bottom right “mask” piece is also one of my favorite things ive done, in a while, glad ya dig it!
